I signed up to do an independent project last quarter. It was a paper on the use of blogs, wikis and bulletin boards in the classroom, something I also discussed as part of a panel at this year's STC Conference. All of this was complemented by a course in computer mediated communication, where discussion of blogs took center stage.
I got really sick of hearing myself talk about blogs. I got sick of hearing the word (it's a lamentable term already). Needless to say, by the time I got around to writing my paper I was already worn down by another quarter's worth of work and countless concurrent discussions of electronic communication.
The paper, in my opinion, was not a fascinating read. The ideas tread upon familiar territory and my conclusions were not all that creative. I felt a bit embarrassed sending it in to the professor I had been working with.
But today I got the paper back with his comments and it seems he thought more highly of it than I did. He even asked if he could use it as a reading in one of his other classes!
I am as stunned as I am pleased. It's nice to know that the work might serve some other purpose than earning me two lousy credits.
